What is Cloud Computing?

Article Posted on: December 3rd, 2009

CloudCloud Computing is a term heard more and more everyday.  It’s a new trend in the business world that is gaining momentum and changing the way organizations manage and operate their IT infrastructure.

Cloud Computing, a Quick Explanation

The word Cloud in technology terms simply means the Internet.  Cloud Computing is the concept of accessing applications, that traditionally are setup and managed within the walls of the organizations, through the Internet.  The application or function is moved from within the organization to a hosted provider that administers the infrastructure.

As an example, instead of hosting your accounting application on local servers, Cloud Computing moves the application to a hosted infrastructure where it is managed by the vendor.

There are a variety of online applications that can help businesses pursue the Cloud Computing movement, and there are many reasons why a company would want to do so.  But there are also reasons why a company wouldn’t.

The main benefit of Cloud Computing is what most business leaders are looking for: cutting costs.  Moving your IT infrastructure to the Cloud can help eliminate loads of overhead, such as hardware costs, licensing, administration and support.  Once an application is moved to the Cloud, the management and support of the infrastructure is taken out of your hands and provided by the vendor.

There are a few concerns that come up with Cloud Computing, such as security, variable costs, and reliability.  These are some issues that organizations have to consider before moving towards the Cloud.

Maybe its for your business.

When to Upgrade to a New Technology

Article Posted on: November 20th, 2009

New operating systems, new iPhones, new Blackberries, there are new devices and technologies coming out all the time designed to help you do business better.  When is the right time to make the investment in new technology?  There are two schools of thought on this.  People want to have the latest and greatest and are willing to stand in five hour lines just to get a new device.  The second angle is to wait and see how the technology develops and grows in the market place.

(Apple must love the fact that people will take time off from work just to spend money on something that is going to be upgraded a few weeks later. Don’t be fooled, these companies know what is going to be released several months in advanced.  So, if you think about it, when Apple debuted the iPhone they already had a release date for a new release of the device only a few weeks later.  What did they get?  Another set of lines ready to meet exceed their budget…but that’s for another article.)

For business use, it is highly recommended that a company waits and sees.  It is all too stressful to spend precious dollars on an upgrade only to be disappointed with the results.  Wait till the new technology gets some play in the market place.  Find out what the weaknesses are and see if the vendor does something about it.  Plus the price will go down and more features might be added.

So, the good thing to do is to wait, especially if you have something that does the job already.  It’s always good to do research on the latest operating systems or mobile devices.  Professionals will always be willing to help you out with this.

Where San Diego is Meeting

Article Posted on: October 5th, 2009

Mobile Technology

As seen on DiscoverSD.com

Everyday, San Diego’s restaurants, hotels, and other public spaces are buzzing with introductions, projects, and deals amongst people on the go.  With the advent of Blackberry’s, iPhones, and laptops, the traditional dull, time consuming meeting is no longer a necessity.  We have mobility!

Here are some of my favorite spots to meet for different kinds of meetings:

The One on One Meeting

This is the meeting I have the most.  Whether I’m meeting with a colleague, client, or friend, The Corner Bakery in Mission Valley is top on my location list.

A subtle detail that makes meetings run smooth is their ordering setup.  The first thing you see is the counter to order your food, and then it will be promptly served at your table.  This saves valuable meeting time, when the usual restaurant setup requires everyone to be ready to order at the same time.  Plus they serve breakfast, lunch and dinner and have free Wi-Fi.

Social B2B

If you’re a networking group, the location can be crucial to the success of the meeting.  A hidden gem in San Diego for these kinds of meetings is On the Border.  They have a large patio area that can host up to 40 people comfortably and affordable drink and appetizer specials for groups.

Professional Event

Having a speaker or professional meeting?  San Diego Public Libraries offer state of the art meeting space for any professional event.  They have meeting rooms that can fit up to 100 people, with Audio/Visual equipment to make any presentation shine.  There are some costs involved, but for everything that the library provides, it’s worth every penny.

Going Solo?

If I ever feel like I need to get out of the office but still get some work done, I’ll head over to The Coffee Bean in Mission Valley.  This is the perfect place to catch up on work with free Wi-Fi, plenty of seating, fresh baked goods and an ice blended mocha.

The great thing about all the locations mentioned is that they are centrally located and have plenty of free parking.  So whether you need a quick change in scenery to brainstorm or a professional venue to accommodate a group, keep these business friendly locations in mind!

What has impressed me most about the IT guys with BIIS Solutions is their professionalism and their persistence. They've been working diligently to solve a communication/printing problem caused by the Vista platform on my computer. I also find them friendly and able to explain the workings of a computer to someone who is much less knowledgable about computers.

Cost Effective

FreedomIQ® is a hosted service, and therefore, does not require on-site call switching hardware; one of the more expensive components of a phone solution. Instead, the FreedomIQ® service is maintained by servers located in a remote and secure facility, allowing customers to forego maintenance and equipment upgrade expenses. The system also allows you to add or remove phones at anytime, leaving you free to grow at your own pace.

The beauty of a hosted VoIP phone solution is that you can access the features of your system wherever you have Internet access. This is especially attractive for businesses dealing with remote offices and telecommuters, as the system seamlessly integrates all entities into one cohesive unit. This allows businesses to maintain a professional image, and appear unified, regardless of where offices or employees are located.

Good customer service is paramount in getting the most out of your VoIP hosted PBX. Luckily, FreedomVOICE® support specialists are rigorously trained to deal with any issue that may arise concerning your system. Have a question or concern?
